WHAT WE DO

OUR ETHOS

PREACH Inclusion® (Promoting Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) embodies the different ways we identify ourselves, recognising that we all have multiple layers to our identity.

We seek to make the built environment sector a more diverse, inclusive and equitable place through educational campaigns, consultancy, workshops and a variety of memberships.

We are not afraid to be disruptive, while acknowledging that many people find it challenging to discuss race and ethnicity. This is why we take a sensitive and tailored approach with every company we work with. We are not just your consultant; we are a critical friend, supporting you on your equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) journey.

Our approach is twofold, placing importance on intersectional EDI approaches to result in the best and most innovative outputs.

Through tailored services, creative analogies and strategic advice, we’re helping companies PREACH Inclusion® as a key part of their overall company strategy – not just an afterthought.

Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.

THE JOURNEY TO PREACH Inclusion®

Having initially launched as a networking organisation in early 2018, what was BAME in Property, from mid-2020 evolved into a limited company to offer a range of services including more events, corporate membership packages, a jobs board, consultancy, lunch & learns and workshops, community engagement strategies, as well as support on industry campaigns in the media and beyond.

Timeline showing the organisation’s journey over the last seven years.

LEAVING BEHIND THE TERM ‘BAME’

Our new name, PREACH Inclusion® has been 12-months in the making.

As an organisation, BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority) was no longer representative of the work we do. Since evolving into a company, our remit has expanded to include race workshops, creative content around different faiths and religions, as well as insights into different cultures.

We also know that many ethnic minority individuals don’t describe themselves as ‘BAME’ and we wanted to leave this controversial term behind.

Many of you who’ve been in our workshops will have been asked, ‘What does race mean to you?’ The varied responses gave us some inspiration for our new name - PREACH Inclusion® (Promoting Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) – a better reflection of how we identify ourselves, what the focus of the organisation has been for a while and where we aim to take it in the future.

Our name places greater importance on intersectional inclusion, and covers new emerging areas of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) including the importance of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Intelligence (also known as CQ).

WHO WE REPRESENT

We work with and represent the broad range of sectors within the built environment – developers, construction companies, architects, planners, housing delivering bodies, surveyors and many more.

The Census 2021 data showed that 18% of the UK’s population classifies as ethnic minority but in the built environment sector this figure is significantly lower. After all, if the role of our sector is to help shape diverse and inclusive communities, the sector should be reflective of this.

Through our networking events and research, we’ve found that ethnic minority individuals not only face greater barriers when entering an industry – through lack of connections, experience or visibility – but once within a company, there are often challenges with progression and retention too.

With the built environment being a hugely contributing factor to economic growth and societal progression, we want to ensure that ethnic minority individuals have the same opportunities to not only enter this fantastic sector but to thrive within it too.
